Dell OptiPlex Desktop, Windows XP, Recently Formatted, How do I put internet on it!?

Well what can I say, I’m computer illiterate. I crashed my computer. So I call up my computer guru brother “HELP I CRASHED MY COMPUTER!” Well he helped me pretty much all the way, but we have a mystery *Eerie music* I installed my wireless adapter (Linksys Wireless-G With Speedbooster) Which goes into the back in a USB port. Then I connected it to the network in our house. So I open up internet explorer, sweat beads down my forehead, and, it won’t connect! So I’m connected to our network but Internet Explorer is being stupid. So I ask my brother he says he has NO CLUE what to do. So calling all computer literate geeks out there Please tell me what should I do!?

And if you are wondering I’m on the mother parental units laptop (Stupid Vista computer thinking its sooooo cool being able to have a backup in case you DO crash it…. I SHANK YOU) lol

PS: I KNOW one of you guys is going to say “USE FIREFOX” I’m sorry but….uh….no Firefox makes me frustrated, i HATE Firefox, it may work for you but it doesn’t work for me, again “Computer Illiterate” Plus I’m an electronics killer

PPS: I don’t have a warranty on my computer anymore, we voided it putting a second Hard Drive into it, which is what crashed my computer to begin with.

Perhaps the adapter is broken, or the usb port is. Put the adapter in a different usb port, and try again. Or try a different adapter.
Or even then, perhaps it isn’t installed properly.
Oh yeah, you might not have a “G” network.

Question:

How can I get wallpaer/desktop pictures that I have copied from internet that are in my pictures to show up?

on display properties (that I access by clicking on start>control panel>appearance and themes>change the desktop>display properties (desktop tab)..

For some reason, all the pictures I had on it are gone except the ones it came with. I think I hit a button or something. How can I get them from my pictures to display properties so I can do stretch, tile, or center with these pictures.

Also when I hit my pictures instead of getting the pictures I get a strip that I then have to maximize (someone gave suggestion earlier but it didn’t work) It used to show the pictures instead of te 1/2 strip when I hit “my pictures” from start. Any help would be appreciated.

go to my pictures and double click on a picture, or a file folder. when you are viewing the picture, right click and “set as desktop background”

if i have roadrunner internet now can i just hook all that stuff up to a laptop if i buy one?

i have a desktop right now and i use roadrunner internet, it is not wireless so its got the ethernet cord and everything on the back connected to the pc. i was wondering if i wanted to get a laptop, would i be able to find a place to plug all of that stuff in? it looks like i have the main cable running through the wall outside, and then i have the ethernet cord and some other cord in the back of the cable modem.
and as for buying a laptop, is it as easy as just going to the store and picking one out or is there more to it

If you buy a laptop, here is what you would do.

You would…
Unplug the power from the cable modem.
Unplug the ethernet that runs from between the modem and the computer, from the computer.
Plug that cable into the ethernet port on your laptop.
Plug the cable modem power back in.
Turn the computer on.
Surf the internet.

I’ve built my own gaming computer and everything is top notch. The only thing I’m stuck on is my internet connection. My dad’s technician told me that I should use a wireless router and connect to my computer using a LAN cable to connect with the LAN port on the router. What should I do?

Question:

All my programs on my desktop are opening with internet explorer :/ please help?

I know this is not a virus. I was don’t exactly remember what I clicked in order for this to happen but i changed the format of every file in my computer :/ I looked in a bunch of sites and they all said to go to default programs and change my settings. I click “associate a file type or protocol with a program” and everything is set to open as it should. I don’t know what the problem is. I tried changing Microsoft word to its original file and all the files ended up turning into microsoft word format instead of just that one program. If you know how to fix this please be precise…im not ver tech savy ..hehe im sorry. Please help me!

99% of all internet problems can be attributed to the wrong set of Web browser and Email clients in coordination of the
AV/ Spyware / Firewall software.

Get the following, all are free for a safe surfing experience, with proven track records and do not take up
system resources like Norton or McAffee.
install in SAFE mode with networking ( hit F-8 at boot time ), run them all in SAFE mode
with networking as you’ll need it for the updates all the programs below will need.
Turn off RESTORE and the RECYLE BIN temporarily as virii can regenerate / reinfect even if you delete
them with both services on. After all the scanning and cleaning after a 2nd reboot and one last
scan do you turn both of them back on.

Once you set it all up create 3 email accounts..

a hotmail or yahoo account for web “verification”, this account you will not care if it get spammed

a sub account ( from the master account )to your ISP that you use for logons, this is the one you use for personal
emails only to trusted people and banking, ebay and paypal. Never use the account for anything else than that,
you find spam is low to non existant if you follow this rule, and even if it does become spam laden, then you
can delete the account and create a new sub account and do all the email updates to ebay, paypal, banks and your
freinds.

finally your master account from your ISP, this one you NEVER use, it’s only kept for creating sub accounts since
changing the master account is a real pain.

and if you have a wireless router follow these tips,

1. Use WPA encryption (WPA-PSK) it’s less crackable then WEP.

2. Make a passphrase that is upper & lower case and has some numbers thrown in there as well, again harder to crack.
some like mAkE1t5eCurE0rel53 and as long as possible.

3. Use MAC access control so only you or authorized PC’s can connect (even if you do have encryption turned on)

4. Turn off DHCP use static addresses.

5. Turn off SSID (and change it) unless your card really needs it (some do)

6. Change username/password of access unit front end

7. Ensure you have the usual firewall enabled on your PC.

8. Paranoia rules, turn WLAN off if your not using it
